Foxconn Finalizes a Tookover Deal of Sharp for US$3.5 Billion

After months of negotiation, Taiwan-based electronic contract manufacturer Foxconn finally inked a tookover deal with Sharp for 388.8 billion yen (US$ 3.5 billion; US$1=111.1 yen) on April 2, acquiring around 66% stake in the Japanese consumer electronics firm, reported Central News Agency. Foxconn will acquire Sharp's key expertises, including LTPS (Low Temperature Poly Silicon), OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode), medium size LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels, MFP (Multifunction Printers), robotics, enterprise solutions, IoT (Internet of Things) home appliance, electronic components, and solar energy system. In particular, Foxconn plans to spend 200 billion yen (US$1.8 billion) between July 2016 and June 2019 to launch mass production of flexible OLED panels in Sharp's Kameyama facility, which is expected to churn out 10 million 5.5-inch-equivalent OLED panels per month by 2019.
